Diwakar Nigam, the Managing Director of Newgen Software
Technologies has been an active player at the national software industry as a
founding member of NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services
Companies) and also a member of the Anti Piracy Task Group formed by NASSCOM.

Nigam has been pursuing the goal of building a world-class
Product Development Company ever since his graduation and Newgen is the means
to realise that goal. Under his dynamic leadership, a team of highly qualified
software professionals develop software, which is totally indigenous. In an
exclusive interview with IndiaCIOReview,
Nigam tells Anurag Jadli about the
challenges that Indian Software Companies are facing these days. He also talks
about the growth of Indian IT industry and Newgen’s role in Indian market.

Being a ‘Made in
India’ software company, what are the main key areas in which you are focusing
in India?

The opportunity for software product companies in India is
really huge. Process automation and digitization are on the agenda of
businesses across business verticals. Our focus would be on integrating
technology enablers including social, mobile, cloud, and analytics into our
offerings. Cloud and Mobility, which are poised to become essential components
of the overall IT strategy of every enterprise, would be our major focus areas.

What are the major challenges that Indian software companies are facing
these days? Do you think there is a lack of connect between Indian software
companies and Indian enterprises?

Since the emergence of Information Technology in the early
80s, the growth in the IT sector in India has been largely driven by services,
while the IT products market is dominated by global players like Microsoft,
Oracle, SAP, IBM etc. The major challenge faced by the Indian software product
companies is the threat from these foreign companies that sell software in
India, and transfer the income to their home countries. If we want to see India
as a leader in the IT space, we need to look at ‘Made in India software’ in a
big way. This is where the Government of India, needs to intervene, and provide
the right ecosystem for local software product companies to thrive and develop
a strong software products industry. “Made in India Software” needs to be
promoted by creating confidence and awareness about the availability of
high-quality products from Indian vendors. China has excelled in this and given
their domestic software industry a huge impetus. We should follow the same
model.

Piracy is certainly another major cause of concern for
Indian software product companies. These companies make huge investments in
developing new software products and they certainly deserve a fair return on
their investments. There is a growing awareness in the IT fraternity that
efforts need to be taken in this direction. Industry bodies like NASSCOM have
also been organizing numerous conferences to create IPR awareness. It may not
be an outright solution but it is definitely a step in the right direction.

Tell us about your newly launched mobile application, ZapIn. Is there
any new projects that are lined up for this year?

ZapIn is an innovative enterprise application that
revolutionizes the way data gets captured. It helps business executives
on-the-move, to capture customer information while they are face-to-face with
the customer, and instantly initiate its processing at the back-office. The key
to the application is its advanced image processing that ensures high quality
images and minimal size, making it viable to be transferred over a GPRS/3G
network. Further, the application enforces business rules and logic so that all
key information and documents are captured ‘First-Time-Right’, before the
process gets initiated. ZapIn is a highly secure application as it encrypts all
data that gets transferred over the network. Only registered Mobile/Tablet
devices are allowed to communicate with the ZapIn server ensuring safety and
security of customer information. While ICICI Bank is already using ZapIn,
other leading players in the Banking and Insurance industry have also signed up
for this application. Given the potential this technology holds, it is bound to
become an essential tool for mobile business executives.

You are among one of the founder member of NASSCOM. What do you think
of the growth of the Indian IT industry?

The IT product has the potential to provide non-linear
growth to the industry. Cloud, social, mobile, and analytics are the trends to
watch for. The Indian market is adopting mainstream BPM for process automation,
and at the same time is open to smart process applications that cater to
vertical specific business needs. For Instance, several Indian banks started
using Newgen’s ChequeFlow solution suite (Smart process application for Banks –
built on BPM platform) to comply with RBI’s CTS mandate. Several key government
organizations are using Newgen’s e-Gov suite (smart process application for
Govt.) to cater to their process management needs. Few banks have begun using
BPM applications on Mobile. ICICI bank is using Newgen’s ZapIn – a smart mobile
application built using our BPM platform and advanced image capture technology.
This is a progressive trend for India as the world market is moving towards a
new variant of BPM suite- namely Intelligent Business Process Management suite
– iBPMS, which will cater to business problems more smartly and intelligently
than ever before. Newgen has already launched its iBPMS suite, named iBPS, to
cater to this new trend. In India, we expect to see banks and insurance
companies being early adopters of this technology, as they have always shown
the way to other industries when it comes to technology adoption.

Tell us about your revenue and growth in the Indian market. What are
your expansion plans?

Newgen registered a 33% growth in revenues in fiscal year
2012-2013, with India contributing a major 33% of the total revenues. In the
coming years we expect the momentum to continue, with similar growth
year-over-year, with major focus on cloud, mobility, social, and analytics. To
further drive growth, the company is aggressively strengthening its Cannel
Partner network and continuing to focus on Research and Development to align
our offerings based on the evolving needs of our customers. Newgen spends
12-15% of its revenues each year on R&D.

Newgen has partnered
with Amazon for the cloud infrastructure. Who are you focusing as your main
customers for cloud offerings?

Cloud presents a new, cost-effective alternative to
traditional ECM & BPM solutions, for small and mid-sized companies (SMEs),
and departments of large enterprises such as Human Resources (HR), Legal, etc.
Without committing to huge initial investments on hardware and licenses
associated with on-premise installations, cloud allows SMEs to start reaping
the benefits of a mission-critical solution instantly. Our cloud solutions are
built to address the requirements of organizations across verticals, including
Real Estate firms, Educational institutions, life sciences organizations, and
law firms.

Newgen’s cloud solutions provide complete access
to Newgen’s ECM & BPM capabilities, while ensuring privacy and security of
intellectual property. Hosted on Amazon Web Services’ public cloud
infrastructure, our solutions are infinitely scalable, to suffice the
requirements of growing number of users. Further, Newgen backs-up the client’s
data in multiple data centers to provide anytime-anywhere data access.
